New York holds more Black residents than the next two cities combined. Detroit, Memphis, and Baltimore are the only cities in the top ten where Black residents are a majority of the population. Los Angeles makes the list on population size alone, at 8.1%, the lowest share of the cities shown.

The two highest Black share of the population cities in the country did not exist a decade ago. South Fulton incorporated in 2017 and Stonecrest in 2016, both carved out of unincorporated parts of the Atlanta suburbs. Together they hold about 170,000 people. Albany, Georgia is the third Georgia city on the list, and DeSoto, a suburb south of Dallas, and Southfield, a suburb north of Detroit, round out the pattern of majority-Black suburbs alongside majority-Black central cities.
Jackson, Mississippi is the largest city in the country above 80%, and Detroit is the largest above 70%. Birmingham is the only city over 150,000 on the list besides Jackson and Detroit.

Most of the highest-share cities are smaller, between 50,000 and 200,000 people, and many are suburbs of Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, or Miami.
