Olivia was the most popular girl name in the United States over the past 10 years. From 2016 through 2025, 170,683 baby girls got the name, according to Social Security Administration records. Emma was second with 161,125, and Sophia third with 133,724.

Emma was the No. 1 girls' name in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Olivia took over in 2019 and has held the top spot for seven straight years. Its lead has nearly disappeared, though. Olivia went to 13,544 girls in 2025, down from 18,577 in 2019, and Charlotte finished just 144 births behind.

Charlotte and Amelia made the biggest moves up. Charlotte went from seventh in 2016 to second in 2025, and Amelia from 10th to fourth. Ava fell the furthest among the top 10, from third to 11th, as its births dropped by more than half, from 16,354 to 7,732.

Just off the list, Abigail was the eighth most popular girl name in 2016 and fell to 41st by 2025. Eliana came from much further back. It ranked 93rd in 2016, with 3,207 births, and reached the top 10 in 2025, when 8,191 girls got the name.

Girls' names are getting more spread out. In 2016, the 10 most popular girl names went to 8.6 percent of the girls in Social Security's file. By 2025 that share was 7.5 percent. The top boy names held steady at about 8.3 percent over the same years.

Names that were popular in earlier decades are in the most popular baby names by decade, and any name's full history can be looked up on the names page.

Sources

Birth counts and ranks are from the Social Security Administration's national baby names file, 2016 through 2025, which lists names given to at least five babies of one sex in a year. The 10-year ranking adds each name's births across those years. Shares are of all girls listed in the file. Spelling variants, such as Sophia and Sofia, are counted as separate names.
