Texas is closing in on New York. In the 2015-2019 survey, New York had 273,934 more Asian residents than Texas. In 2020-2024 the gap was 52,299. Texas's Asian population grew 27.9 percent between the two periods, compared with 11.7 percent in New York.
The fastest growth was in states with smaller Asian populations. Montana's rose 30.4 percent, Idaho's 29.1 percent, and South Carolina's 29.0 percent. North Carolina and Utah were each up about 27 percent. Hawaii, which already had the highest share, grew the least, 2.7 percent. Nationally, the count rose 15.1 percent.
Part of the increase may reflect more people reporting two or more races. The bureau changed how it asked and coded race for the 2020 census, and the number of people reporting multiple races rose sharply. The "alone or in combination" column, which counts everyone who checked Asian, is more affected by that change than the "Asian alone" column.
West Virginia has the smallest share, 1.2 percent, followed by Mississippi at 1.5 percent and Wyoming and Montana, each at 1.7 percent. Wyoming has the fewest Asian residents, 9,676.
Where Asian Americans live depends heavily on their family's country of origin. Our pages on Chinese Americans, Indian Americans, Filipino Americans, and Vietnamese Americans break those down by city. For comparison, see the Hispanic population by state.

Figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 2020-2024 and 2015-2019. "Asian alone or in combination" is table B02011, which counts everyone who reported Asian, including people who also reported another race. "Asian alone" is table B02001. Both include Hispanic residents who reported an Asian race. Shares use total population from table B01003. Background on the 2020 race question changes is in the bureau's August 2021 explainer.
