About 10.6% of Americans are currently divorced. The census measures the current marital status of everyone 15 and older. In Anderson, Indiana, the figure is 19.6%, the highest of any US city with at least 50,000 residents. In Lakewood, New Jersey, it is 1.9%.

Four of the top twelve are in Indiana
Anderson, Kokomo, Evansville, and Jeffersonville all land in the top twelve. Anderson and Kokomo are former General Motors and Chrysler towns that lost most of their auto plants between the 1990s and 2010s. The pattern across the list shows up as older industrial cities in the Midwest and upper South, plus a set of Florida cities with large retiree populations, where divorced people in their 60s and 70s are less likely to remarry than younger people.
Santa Fe is the one outlier, a small state capital with a large arts and retirement population and a median age of about 43.

Lakewood has one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities in the country and a median age under 20, and its 1.9% is less than a fifth of the national rate. Provo and Eagle Mountain are heavily Latter-day Saint. Cupertino and Sammamish are affluent tech suburbs with large Asian immigrant populations with very high marriage rates. Florence-Graham, an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, is over 90% Hispanic with a large immigrant share.

The American Community Survey asks the current marital status of everyone aged 15 and over. The divorced figure counts people who are divorced and have not remarried at the time of the survey. It is a snapshot of current status, not an annual divorce rate, so it is affected by how quickly divorced people remarry and by who moves into a city.
